Al Kooper Turns 80 Today and Remains Bafflingly Anonymous
One of the few things the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has done right in recent years was finally - finally - inducting Al Kooper in 2023.
It’s just too bad the RRHOF’s tone-deaf brain trust waited until Kooper was nearly 80 - which he is as of today, Feb. 5, 2024 - to do it.
For while Kooper’s name is known by virtually no one, virtually everyone knows his music and his accomplishments. And he’s revered by his fellow musicians.
“I would describe Al as the best musician I have ever seen,” Joe Walsh once said.
Here are a few of the restless genius’ career highlights.
* He co-wrote Gary Lewis and the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring.”
* He co-founded the Blues Project.
* He co-founded and fronted Blood, Sweat & Tears on Child is Father to the Man before ceding the band to David Clayton-Thomas.
* He played the signature organ riffs on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone.”
* He played the French horn for the Rolling Stones on “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
* He organized and produced Stephen Stills and Mike Bloomfield’s Super Session.
* He declined to sign Tom Petty’s first band, Mudcrutch, because, they “weren’t that good yet.”
* He discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced their initial run of LPs.
“I think Lynyrd Skynyrd owes its success to Al Kooper,” Ed King once said. “Being a Yankee from the North, he provided a bird’s-eye view of how the Southern band should be presented to the world.”
Kooper’s the one turning 80 today. He’s also the one who’s been doing the gift-giving for decades.

the Right Time
[Verse 1] You have made the moment into happy hours And in just that moment changed the rain cloud into flowers And I can see that you're afraid You think it's some kind of mistake that you made Well, let me set your heart at ease 'Cause I'm down on my bended knees, sayin' to you
[Chorus] There's no time like the right time Baby, the right time is now (Said that there's no time) Like the right time If you don't think that you can love me You can bet I'm gonna show you how You know I'm gonna show you how
[Verse 2] Every single second that you just let go Multiply by a million, yeah It just makes me want you that much more You got me sittin' here countin' time 'Cause sooner or later you'll find That a second's so much dearer than A fifty dollar bill If you need someone to love you Well, you got someone who will
[Chorus] And there's no time like the right time And baby, the right time is now (Said that there's no time) Like the right time If you don't think that you can love me You can bet I'm gonna show you how You know I'm gonna show you how
[Outro] No time like the right time Talkin' 'bout the right time, yeah I said there's no time like the right time Like the right time, like the right time

AllMusic Staff Pick: Sun Ra & the Blues Project The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale: Batman and Robin
In 1966, budget label Tifton obtained the rights to make a novelty album of tracks for Batman and Robin. While this album came out around the same time as the popular Batman TV series, none of the tracks on the LP actually appeared on the show and was produced as a cash grab. Credited to "The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale," there is no Dan or Dale, and is actually the Blues Project with Sun Ra and members of his Arkestra hired as studio musicians. When hired, the band did not know it was a Batman tie-in. While Sun Ra was involved, most tracks are less far out and would fit in best in a 1960's cartoon chase montage.

Putting some positivity out there about the election
Harris has raised a record amount of money from small donors after Biden dropped out, in addition to being able to access all the funds from their campaign they already had
Trump is deeply unpopular and people have already seen the chaos that 4 years of his presidency would bring. A lot of people have been energized to vote against him, even if they're not fond of Dems
Polling showed a red wave for Republicans in the 2022 midterms, and yet they only barely had control of the House, and couldn't even agree on a Speaker for a historic amount of time. Dems also increased their lead in the Senate. Historically, midterms favor the opposition party and have lower turnout, so this is a good sign for the House in 2024
Dems are fighting back in swing states. PA and GA both put in Democratic senators in the midterms
In my home state of PA, I am from Bucks County, which is a swing county for the state. Moms for Libery took over the school board and used it to attack queer students, enact book bans, and funnel money to themselves and the superintendent. At the most recent election, Dems turned out and took back every single open seat, ousting the board and superintendent. Worry about similar takeovers in surrounding school boards also increased turnout
Abortion rights are on the ballot in many states, which has been a winning issue for Dems and increased turnout
Republicans were prepared to attack a feeble old Biden who isn't the strongest speaker. I don't think they expected him to actually drop out, and they now have to put an 78 year old convicted felon up against a prosecutor
Awareness of Project 2025 and it's contents has entered the public sphere and is being much more openly discussed on the news. While Trump has insisted he has nothing to do with it, most of the authors worked in his administration and Trump has worked closely with the Heritage foundation
Feel free to add more things on this thread, but the most important thing is to get out there and VOTE
Vote for President
Vote for Senators
Vote for Congresspeople
Vote in your local elections
Vote Blue down ballot

Reminder: the companies and political entities pushing Project 2025 have addresses and go out to lunch a lot and should never eat a spitless meal for the rest of their lives.
Practice bagpipes outside their secure compounds.
Follow them around ringing a bell wherever they go.
If they are going to be farcically evil, be Animaniacally good. Be the definition of chaotic justice.
Also, vote. It might just kick the ball down the road a bit, but that gives people more time to organize a concerted resistance (in no way on any social media platform) to the fascist creep happening in America. It is possible to take this country from the bastards who control it, it will take work, effort, and occasionally going offline and talking to humans though.

To anyone considering not voting because of the Palestinian genocide, I have this to ask:
How many Palestinian people do you think you're helping by laying back and inviting the GOP to crush you under foot? Self flagellation didn't cure The Plague, and it won't fix this situation either.
If you don't like the idea of voting for Harris, I doubt I'll be able to change your mind, but consider this: 468 congressional seats out of a total 535 are up for re-election THIS NOVEMBER. You want to make the government start actually representing the will of the people? Start there.
We're living in frightening times, and apathy is a very comfortable state of being, but you need to act. If you don't, who will?

Somewhere I saw a post that was like, "any state can turn blue if enough people vote."
This is very true. And with so much at stake here, you shouldn't assume that people won't turn out in droves to vote blue even in red states.
Project 2025/Agenda 47 isn't the kind of thing that normal, everyday Republicans actually want. Trumpers are a weird bunch. As we raise more awareness, your Republican swing voter types are going to be like, "hey uh, wait, this isn't what I want" and a lot of them are going to start eyeing Harris.
So even if you live in a red state, don't assume that your vote is meaningless. Do not. For one minute. Assume this.

The Blues Project was an American band formed in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood in 1965. The group's original iteration broke up in 1967.[1] Their songs drew from a wide array of musical styles. They are most remembered as one of the most artful practitioners of pop music, influenced as it was by folk, blues, rhythm & blues, jazz and the pop music of the day. https://intothemysticcrypt.blogspot.com/2024/06/the-blues-project-lazarus-1971.html
